Venus on the Cover 6: A Pubic Wars Special - 1976

January 1976

We continue on with ur look at the increasing exposure on the covers of American (I series on UK magazines will follow) men's magazines with a look at 1976.  Now that most men's magazines had bared their cover models' breasts, the amount of skin on display stabilised, so I won't be looking at those magazines that just produced more of the same.  Instead I will look at magazines who continued to push the envelope a little in the year that really saw the style of posing inside reach what it pretty much remained at for the next forty years.  It is curious to note, however, that what could be shown in 1976 on the covers, is far more than today.

January 1976

Only half a dozen years before this, pubic hair was considered so taboo that anyone showing it in a US magazine risked prosecution for obscenity.  Oddly, this prohibition did not extend to the pubic mound itself, provided no labia were visible.  Still, it was unusual to have such a baldly assertive presentation as Gallery had on their January 1976 cover.  The hand on the inner thigh adds tactile suggestion too.

January 1976

Modern Man, all during 1975, when most of the other magazines had surrendered on the nipple front, had kept their coy concealment in place but for January 1976 their cover girl flashed one pert peak at last.

January 1976

Stud went much further, with a girl in splendidly pussy hugging pair of shorts whose open fly also gave a glimpse, unusually, of her dark curls.

February 1976

Club was always the most bottom-focussed of the top five men's magazines in America and their February girl, while not showing anything untoward, gave us this assertive, open-legs posterior shot.

March 1976

Hustler, surprisingly, whilst also giving a full on rear shot, had their model pose in a rather more refined way than Club's effort.  Even moire surprisingly, they still hadn't uncovered any nipples on their covers yet.

March 1976

Having had one on show in January by March Modern Man presented the full pair.  The lady's hand is straying towards her groin, as well.

March 1976

Fred Enke, when working for Paul Raymond Publications, did more than most to promote the spread legs shot and even though his covergirl is covered up, this clingy effort is an extreme pussy emphasising shot.

April 1976

Affair's April covergirl's hand was also straying towards her groin, as she slid her hand inside her white trousers.

April 1976

Not so much straying towards it but cupping it was Swank's groin clasping girl for March, in the throes of a sexy phone call.

April 1976

Ace, had at last dropped the veil on their covergirls' busts and presented this perfectly perky pair for April.

April 1976

After more than two decades, Adam too joined the nipple club with this picture of Linda, taken by Caesar Guest.

April 1976

For Men Only had covergirl Merrica Larouche bust the nipple barrier for the first time as well.  She was in one of just two girl pictorials that had to be squeezed into its meagre 48 pages.

April 1976

Club's girls were still keeping their hands between their legs on the cover.  To conceal or emphasise? It could be either, of course.

April 1976

Gent was still resisting full exposure and relying on tease but this was, perhaps, their boldest cover shot to date.

 April 1976

Hustler, at last, gave their first hint of nipple on the cover of their April issue, in an issue which featured a notorious pictorial of a very pregnant model.

April 1976

The shadow behind the raised thigh of Stud's April covergirl hardly covered anything, in what was a very bold display for the time.

May 1976

May saw the arrival of yet another men's magazine, in the shape of Pub, which would last for ten years.  Their first cover had this unusual chest down pose.  Gravity does interesting and delightful  things to women's breasts but this dangling pose is quite rare.

May 1976

Playboy's took a Seurat pointillist painting and added topless Playmate Nancy Cameron who would, as a result, present Playboy's last uncovered nipples on its cover.

May 1976

Hustler had a fashionably pale and interesting girl on their cover in May.  Poking out from the sequins on her right breast was the magazine's first fully revealed nipple or, at least, the teat.

May 1976

May's Stag had an effective cover featuring an innocent looking girl but with wantonly spread legs, to get the imagination going.

May 1976

More knickers delving on the cover of High Society while the girl munches a banana at the same time ,in a none too subtle display.

May 1976

Fake ecstasy on Genesis' cover, as their girl strokes her hidden groin while caressing a breast.  1976 was certainly developing a fashion for aroused looking girls, not just fully exposed breasts.

May 1976

Man's World answered the question 'what is better than a pair of girl's bare breasts?'  Double the nipples, a soft lesbian atmosphere  and two pretty young blondes made for a striking cover.

 May 1976

Duke's covergirl for May pushed the crotch of her knickers aside to reveal quite a lot of sparse hairs at her groin.

May 1976

Stud was even bolder with their cover model's hand totally failing to conceal her thick bush.  Pubic hair and groin touching for this one.

June 1976

Gent, at last, exposed a teat, even if only in profile, in this abstracted helping of flesh for their June issue.

June 1976

Penthouse had a selection of girls who were the finalists to their Pet of the Year play-off.  Three of them were displaying the very tops of their bushes on the cover

 June 1976

Flick stopped being coy for July and had their girl show everything. The barely glimpsed beaver was out in all its flurry glory.

July 1976

Many men's magazines had special American Bicentennial editions and Playboy had a suitably patriotic cover.  It also had cover model, Playmate of the Year 1974, Cyndi Wood in a dress so sheer that not only her nipples but her pubic hair was visible; the only time the latter appeared on the cover of US Playboy.

July 1976

Hustler had its own flag-waving Bicentennial cover but made a point of ensuring that their model's tiny bikini bottom didn't cover everything in their most daring cover to date.

July 1976

High Society had a groin revealing shot on their July cover but the groin in question was shaven and so no hair was on display below the waist.

 July 1976

Jaguar, on the other hand, offered this cute smiling girl whose hand and shower head doesn't quite conceal her curls.

 July 1976

Not quite as much on display on Candid's cover that month but their covergirl is displaying a few wisps and has her hand on her groin for good measure.

July 1976

Flick displayed pubic hair again for the second month in a row but it would disappear from the cover after this issue.  They had also changed the typeface of the title to create an illusion around what the title word actually was.

 August 1976

Another new magazine premiered in August with the first issue of Cheri but they offered only this back view for their first cover.

August 1976

Club had its first visible fluff on display on the cover through their model's partly sheer knickers.  Not a very subtle pose, either.

 September 1976

Cacvalier had a provocatively offered rear end for September's issue, worthy of anything that Club was doing at the time.

September 1976

Cheri's second issue presented their first nipples which belonged to Elizabeth Ray.  The winner of 1975's Miss Virginia contest she had been at the centre of a political scandal that year. She had been hired by US Representative Wayne Hays as a secretary when, in fact, her sole job was to have sex with him.  When the affair was discovered she admitted that, despite being on his staff: "I can't type, I can't file, I can't even answer the phone."   He had to resign and she appeared in a number of men's magazines, including that same month's Girls of Washington pictorial in Playboy.

September 1976

Club's covergirl presented a particularly splendid pair and had both her hands between her legs, cupping her lace covered pussy.

September 1976

There was more apparent pussy delving going on on the cover of Man to Man that month, with their young lady making sure that everything is where it should be.

September 1076

Jaguar's September girl had spread her thighs to reveal the thick bush underneath her sheer black French knickers.

September 1976

Following on from their July cover Hustler had a girl whose bikini bottoms were even less up to the job.  She also displayed Hustler's first pair of uncovered breasts.

October 1976

For October,  Duke went in for one of the increasingly popular fingers inside the knickers coupled with ecstatic expression shots.

October 1976

The same approach was taken by Man's World the same month, although this lady's fingers are only just inside her knickers.

October 1976

Stud's girl's fingers have pulled at her knickers crotch enough to offer a glimpse of what lies beneath them.

 October 1976

Penthouse Pet of the Month Suzanne Saxon is also displaying her bush through her tiny see through knickers.

November 1976

For November, Pub's covergirl was just showing the top of her fluff at the bottom of the page.  This must have been quite deliberate as they could have cropped the image that bit tighter if they had wanted to.

November 1976

Club had, perhaps, their most daring cover ever; in that not only has the girl got her hand on her pussy, and not only are there stray hairs visible at the edge of her knickers but there is a clear view of her labia as well.  None of the other newsstand magazines ever went as far as this.

December 1976

That said, Penthouse has British Pet of the Year Jane Hargrave showing a good deal of her labia majora as the pulled up groin of her shorts doesn't quite cover her.

1976 was the high point for exposure on the covers of men's magazines in the US and from then on things went into retreat, until even nipples disappeared again from the covers of newsstand magazines.  The general rule was that the bigger the magazine the quicker it stopped showing everything.  We have a few more posts to do, covering the rest of the seventies.
